Flights to Iceland for $99 One Way

Greetings from New Brunswick. This place is charming and super cool – literally (yesterday the HIGH was 1° F).

Speaking of cool – in more than one sense of the word – Iceland is on my mind again. I previously wrote about WOW air’s $99 flights from the East Coast. I missed the last sale, but it is back.

Also note the equally-attractive fares to London.

WOW Air fares

Dates vary, but the $99 price seems to be available for April, May, and October 2015 per their Reykjavik destination page.

WOW air sale dates

While those months currently do not work for me, let me know if you go so I can live vicariously. 🙂

Also, I’ll repeat what I said last time about WOW air. When you fly a low-cost airline you can expect an unbundled experience, meaning just about everything but the seat costs extra. Indeed, the fee for a carry-on bag is upwards of $29.

But remember: when other airlines say you get free bags, they’re not really free. They’re just included in the price of the ticket.

Since flights from the US to Iceland usually run around $600 round trip on most carriers, the math still works out in favor of this deal.

Free Entrance to All US National Parks, Free Admission to 150+ Museums

Free entrance to national parks

On several dates each year, the National Park Service offers free entrance to all national parks in the United States.

If you’re planning ahead, the 2015 days are:

Natl Parks Free Entrance Dates

For inspiration, Smarter Travel wrote about 10 national parks you never knew existed. However, the US has over 400 national parks so there are many more options to consider!

There is a park-finder tool where you can search by name, location, and other parameters.

Free admission to museums

Bank of America’s Museums on Us program offers cardholders free general admission to over 150 museums, science centers, and botanical gardens on the first full weekend of each month.

The 2015 dates are:

Bofa Museum Dates

For free admission on valid dates, simply show your photo ID plus a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch debit or credit card.

You can find a museum locator on the program’s website.

Do note admission is complimentary only for the cardholder (although many participating institutions already offer free admission to children year round).

[Thanks to Million Mile Secrets for the tip.]

Free $10 Chevron/Texaco Gas Card with $100 Gas Card Purchase

Just a quick note that eBay has a deal offering a free $10 promotional gas card when you purchase a $100 Chevron and Texaco gas card.

Chevron-Texaco GC

While $10 is not life-changing for you (I hope), being able to buy gas on sale is rare enough to make this a nice deal. Note the $10 promotional card expires on February 28, 2015.

If you managed to buy a discounted eBay gift card, using that to pay for this purchase adds another layer of savings. 🙂

While you’re here don’t forget to visit the permanent Deals Page where I added a few new ones today, such as:

  • Half off H&R Block tax software
  • 33% off a Jamba Juice gift card

Have a great rest of the day!

Free Cocktail on Southwest, $35 off Travelocity, and a Free Photo Book

I hope your 2015 is off to a great start!

Complimentary cocktail on Southwest today

If you are feeling any…um…“ill effects” of a New Year’s Eve celebration, maybe another cocktail isn’t the best idea.

Otherwise, if you’re flying Southwest today enjoy a free premium beverage on board.

Southwest Free Drink

The airline extends this offer on various holidays throughout the year but doesn’t advertise it much, so you will likely have to speak up and ask for your free drink.

(The next free-drink day is Valentine’s Day in case you plan ahead.)

Travelocity offers

Travelocity has several offers valid through 11:59pm PT on January 4, 2015:

Travelocity Promos

In my opinion the best one is $35 off $100 on a booking made through the app. Be sure to use promo code MOBILE2015.

The code works on single-night or multiple-night bookings although not every property participates. You can apply the promo code after selecting a property – that’s how you can tell if it participates.

Free photo book

What to do with all those photos from your travels?

Walgreens is offering a free brag book through January 3 with promo code BRAGBK.

Walgreens Free Brag Book

Do note the free offer excludes tax and shipping (standard shipping is $2.99).

How to Get Free ShopRunner Shipping (Forever?)

Happy New Year!

Occasionally I write about random, non-travel deals if they’re really interesting. Other times I’ll just quietly add them to the Deals Page for your perusal.

But sometimes shipping fees can “kill” an otherwise great deal.…unless you have ShopRunner.

ShopRunner is similar to Amazon Prime – except it works with many stores.

For an annual membership fee, you receive unlimited free 2-day shipping with no minimum order size and free return shipping.

When I first got ShopRunner (years ago, for free) the list of participating stores wasn’t that long – maybe 20 or so. But over time they’ve added many more and now have over 80 stores. More importantly, many are stores real people actually shop at.

You can view the full list of participating stores here.

Some of these stores offer free shipping intermittently (with the occasional promo code) or regularly (with a minimum order amount). But with ShopRunner I can get free shipping any time. Not only that, it is expedited (2-day) shipping and requires no minimum purchase amount. I have used it to ship, for example, just one tube of toothpaste.

It even beats Amazon Prime in that return shipping is also free.

The annual membership fee is $79. But you can get ShopRunner for free if you have an eligible American Express card.

ShopRunner Amex

I’ve never seen an expiration date to the free-ness of my account, so as far as I know it is good indefinitely. I have enjoyed ShopRunner benefits for years without paying a penny.

Frontier Flights for $20 and Alaska Award Flights for 5,000 Miles

Happy New Year’s Eve! I hope you had a fruitful 2014 and wish you a happy, healthy 2015.

Frontier $20 flights

Frontier Airlines is having another one-day sale, with $20 fares from seven cities: Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Phoenix, Trenton/Princeton, and Washington-Dulles.

Here is a sample – Washington-Dulles to Fort Lauderdale for $20 including taxes:

Frontier IAD-FLL $20

Book by midnight PST today (December 31) for travel January 6 through February 11, 2015.

Things to note:

  • These are one-way sale fares; flights in the reverse direction are not as cheap so you might shop around – or use miles – for return flights.
  • Frontier has fees for carry-on bags, although items fitting under the seat are free.

Alaska Airlines award sale

With Alaska’s Winter Award Sale award flights are available for as few as 5,000 miles.

Sample award fares:

Alaska Award Sale

Most coach awards normally start at 12,500 miles (and awards to Hawaii at 20,000 miles) each way, so this can represent significant savings.

Book by January 8 and travel between January 6 and March 5, 2015.

Have a safe New Year’s Eve. I am taking the rest of the year off. 🙂 See you in 2015!

1,000 Bonus Hilton HHonors Points, $50 off $100+ at Bon-Ton, and More

Bon-Ton currently has several good discount codes. Even though I’m writing about luggage, these are site-wide discounts so they should work on other items (with some exclusions, as always).

  • Code ZDEC1229SAV takes $50 off a purchase of $100 or more. It was to expire yesterday (December 29) but is still working at the time I write this.
  • Alternatively, code AFTERXMAS14 takes 25% off sale items and expires January 1.

For free shipping and free returns, use ShopRunner. If you don’t have ShopRunner, use code FREESHIP for free shipping on $75+.

I was shopping for luggage, so here is my luggage find: 🙂

The Samsonite Fiero 20″ Spinner, originally $260, is $80 with the discount. That’s almost 70% off!

Samsonite Fiero

In other news…

I have a couple other deals to add to the permanent Deals Page but since I am writing I thought I’d mention them here as well.

Hilton HHonors is offering 1,000 bonus points for updating your email address by tomorrow (December 31). This is a targeted offer, but it doesn’t hurt to try (only takes a few seconds). I was not targeted and only got a nicely worded message saying they already had a valid email for me. Oh well.

Finally, Neiman Marcus Last Call is offering $25 off a $50+ purchase when you pay through Visa Checkout. (Any credit card can be used with Visa Checkout.) Again, use ShopRunner for free shipping and free returns, or use code FREESHIP for free shipping on $75+.

Choice Hotels Winter Promo – Triple Points on Midweek Stays

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday week!

Choice Hotels’ winter promotion, awarding triple points for midweek stays, has started – so don’t forget to register if there’s even a remote chance you might end up staying at a Choice property during the promotion period.

The promotion runs through February 18, 2015.

Choice Hotels Promo Banner

If you’re unfamiliar with Choice Hotels, its brands include Cambria Suites, Clarion, Comfort Inn, Econo Lodge, and Ascend Hotel Collection, among others.

Choice Hotels Brands

Choice Privileges base (non-elite) members normally earn 10 points per dollar spent on most brands (5/$ on some of the lower-earning brands).

With this triple-points promotion they would instead earn 30 points per dollar on midweek stays (15/$ on the lower brands).

Since a reward night starts at 6,000 points, one could be earned with $200 in spend through this promo.

Additional tips

If you’re not already a Choice Privileges member, have an existing member refer you. You’ll each receive 500 points after your first eligible stay. (I’m happy to refer if you shoot me a note through the contact form. I’ll need your first name and email address for the referral.)

Also check Choice Hotels’ promotions page for potentially combinable offers.

And if you have one, be sure to use a credit card that awards bonus points on hotel charges.

Free Virgin America Points and Free Peet’s Coffee

Happy holidays!

Virgin America is offering 500 free bonus points to members.

VirginAm 500

It only took a few seconds to claim my points. I value a Virgin America point at roughly two cents, so 500 points is worth about $10.

Award flights start as low as 2,500 points, so you could also look at this as one-fifth of a free flight for a few seconds of your time.

If you don’t fly Virgin America often, this is also an easy way to keep your points alive since points expire after 18 months of inactivity.

In other news, Peet’s Coffee & Tea is offering a free cup of coffee or tea today.

Peets Coffee

Enjoy. 🙂

Quick Travel Tip: Use a Document Scanner App

Often I’ll get random pieces of somewhat-important paper while traveling – a receipt here, a document there.

After a while, it adds up to a pile of paper that I don’t want to (1) lug home, and (2) deal with filing away when I get home.

Even at home I’m paperless as much as possible anyway. Searching for a document that’s electronically filed is easier than trying to remember where I physically put a random piece of paper.

JetScanner Lite App

For scanning documents while on the road, I use the free Jet Scanner Lite mobile app (there is an ad-free paid version as well).

You just take a picture of the document with your phone or tablet. The app you lets make edits, then converts the picture to a PDF or JPG file. From there, you can email the file (to yourself and/or others) or send it directly to a cloud drive.
